Beauty Tips

Get expert advice for your wedding day! From the makeup you wear to the healthiest hair, here's some tips you should try for Makeup, Hair, and Skin ...

Makeup

1. The first piece of wedding advice: Stick with your own style and don't try anything new. Your wedding pictures are with you forever so you should strive to make them look timeless.

2. Prime your skin before you apply makeup. (Since stress dehydrates skin and can cause breakouts, it pays to pamper yourself, especially during hectic wedding planning.) Treat yourself to a purifying mask, a gentle scrub and a good moisturizer.

3. The foundation you choose must match your skin exactly and be used all over; making sure it's blended in at the jawline. (Test the shade on the side of your face - it should completely disappear.) If unsure about the color you need, go for a base with yellow tones, since most women actually have yellow-toned skin.)

4. Top your foundation with a loose powder. Select one from a range that's tinted from pale yellow to beige. (Avoid translucent since it can look ashy.) Apply it with a puff for best coverage.

5. For a finished look, fill your eyebrows with a shadow that matches their color; apply with a slanted brush.

6. Define eyelids with a medium-tone, neutral shadow like taupe, gray or heather. Highlight under the browbone with a lighter color try bone or white - but stay away from frosted shades since they can accentuate fine lines.

7. Used over time, some waterproof mascaras can dry out eyelashes. However, they're often just the thing for a wedding day. Look for a non-drying formula.

8. When applying blush, choose two shades. First, use a neutral tawny or sand pink (for a healthy glow) under a brighter color. The layering creates a warm, natural effect, helps color stay on longer, and shows up better in photos.

9. For your wedding day, slick lips with whatever shade you like. It's important to wear a color you're comfortable with, so if red is your favorite, wear it. Prefer something pale? Go for it. You might even mix a pale shade with a brighter color to create a custom-made look.

10. Use a lip liner for more precise lipstick application and longer lasting color. Choose a liner that matches, or is one shade darker than your lipstick. Apply it after lipstick to ensure that neither will fade. If you like, go over your lipstick with the pencil. For a dewy look, apply a gloss over it all-it's the only place on the face where shine is okay.

Hair

1. Most hair types actually benefit from deep conditioning. If your hair is thin or fine, use a deep moisturizing conditioner once a week. For normal hair, use twice a week; permed or color-treated hair, three times, and for dry or damaged hair, use daily.

2. For maximum conditioning, apply a deep conditioner and then slip on a shower cap while you finish showering. The heat from the shower creates a thermal effect, opening the hair's cuticles and allowing the conditioner to penetrate better.

3. To achieve that up-to-the-minute straight look, dampen a cotton ball with hairspray and lightly stroke onto clean, dry hair in a straight, downward direction. The result'? Great hold without a stiff hairspray feeling.

4. To turn frizzy curls into shiny ones, take sections of clean, slightly damp hair, apply hairspray, twist into pincurls and secure with bobby pins. Let hair dry naturally or blow dry on a cool setting. Remove pins, shake out hair without brushing and lightly spritz again with hairspray for radiant locks.

5. For a sleek and sophisticated wet-look shine on short hair, wash first then towel dry. Liberally apply spray-on gel and style with your fingers. Let hair dry without combing for a superb shine.

6. Pack a conditioner in your beach bag. Once hair is wet, comb through conditioner and let the warmth of the sun help soak it in. It's a great way to beat split ends.

7. To prevent split ends, apply a leave-in conditioner or styling lotion to the ends of hair before using a curling iron or hot rollers.

8. Thinking of perming your hair before the wedding? Get it done at least two weeks prior to the big day so that your stylist can create a look you'll feel comfortable with and the perm has time to "relax."

9. Need to reperm to perk up your curls? Think again: Ask your stylist to do a root perm, only perming the new growth while protecting the ends with special plastic-coated papers. It's a lot healthier for your hair.

10. Semi-permanent hair colors are a good way to experiment with a new shade. A true semi-permanent color penetrates the hair only slightly and lasts six to eight shampoos because it's not mixed with a developer (peroxide). However, it won't completely cover gray unless you use a very dark color. Long-lasting semi-permanent color that is mixed with a developer lasts 25-30 shampoos and can cover gray - but most cannot lighten hair.

11. Permanent hair color can actually make hair seem fuller and does thicken hair strands but be sure not to go too dark if hair is really thin. Lots of contrast between the hair and scalp can actually emphasize thin hair.

12. If you'd like to color your hair for your wedding, do it well in advance. Since color is applied every six weeks, a bride needs to decide on a hairstyle and color at least three to six months before the wedding. The stylist will also want to practice the hairstyle with the headpiece once before the actual event.

13. When having your hair colored before going on long trip, ask your colorist to seal in the shade with a special no-color gloss. Your color will last longer and you'll get great shine.

14. If you'd like to boost a fading shade, try a color-enhancing shampoo or enhancer. They contain dyes that deliver more color each time you use them by building a color reservoir on the cuticle layer of the hair.

Skin

1. First, to help minimize fine lines and wrinkles, exfoliate skin and then apply an apha hydroxy moisturizing lotion. These contain alpha hydroxy acids, which naturally occur in food substances.

2. Instead of the damaging sun, try a self tanner. Before you begin, use an exfoliating scrub all over so that you have a smooth surface to work on.

3. Before the wedding and beyond pamper the skin on your body with a special salon treatment. Schedule a mud bath, seaweed application, salt scrub or hydrotherapy. Or if money is tight, do one yourself at home. The result is healthy, glowing skin, all over.

Reception Ideas

Make sure your reception is personal and the way you want it to be - remember, it's your party!! Consider the following suggestions as you plan your reception:

  • Consider what influence the time of year your wedding takes place will have on your choice of reception site and food.
  • Make sure that your band or DJ has ample space and reasonable amplification. Have the musicians play a variety of music so that everyone can enjoy dancing at the reception.
  • Be sure that your photo session does not last too long - you do not want your guests to notice a conspicuous absence.
  • Your reception menu need not be extravagant. Serve what is appropriate for the time of day.
  • Include a memory card with your invitations, along with a request that each guest write down a special memory of you, your fiancé, or the two of you, and return it with the response card. You can glue them into an album and place it near the guest book for everyone to look through.
  • Show a short video (no more than 10 minutes) that follows both of you from childhood to courtship to the wedding. Incorporate videotapes, home movies, snapshots, and interviews with friends and relatives.
  • Ask each guest to bring a photo of themselves with one or both of you and put someone in charge of attaching them to a large board. It's a great conversation piece at the reception, and a wonderful keepsake in your home.
  • Place a letter of introduction on each guest table. It can outline who the guests are and their relationship to the bride or groom.
  • Recruit testimonials. Each of you asks a friend from grade school, another from high school, and yet another from college to share a brief anecdote about their relationship with the bride or groom.
  • After your own first dance, request the first dance from your parents' wedding reception - of your grandparents' or siblings.' Make sure your bandleader or DJ is aware of the significance of any special song so they can make the appropriate announcement.
  • Say it with cake. What you put on the top of your wedding cake can say a lot about the two of you as a couple. If you're both into photography, you might crown your cake with a framed double portrait. Maybe you're avid ornithologists - instead of a bride and groom, decorate the top layer with ceramic birds. Opera buffs? A really talented baker can pipe on the notes from your favorite aria. The sky's the limit.

Even if you've already verbally thanked your guests, you must send a personal, handwritten note of appreciation for each gift you receive. Follow these guidelines:

  • Select your notes early. The most important part of writing thank-you notes is to do it promptly. Set a goal of writing all of your thank you notes within three to six months of your wedding day.
  • Don't use notes with a preprinted message, and don't type them. Both are impersonal.
  • Keep careful records. As each gift arrives, jot down a description and the name of the sender. If you have time also jot down your thoughts and feelings about it as well. And don't forget about shower gifts!
  • Categorize. Ideally you should acknowledge gifts in the order you receive them. If a pile is forming, however, divide it into groups: your family, his family, mutual friends. Or one way that works is to categorize by the type of gift. For example, everyone who gives a monetary gift, write at the same time, and tell them what you purchased or how money was the perfect gift because you can pick out exactly what you want.
  • Set up an inviting writing space Clear a desk or table and reserve the area for doing thank-you's. You'll be able to knock off a few notes anytime, without having to hunt for a pen or your gift list. Try putting on some relaxing music.
  • Create a routine-and-reward system. A suggestion from time-management experts: Set a goal and give yourself a reward when you meet it. When they're done treat yourselves to dinner or a movie.
  • If thank-you note writing becomes overly tiresome or tedious, take a break. Also remember to think about how grateful you really are for all the gifts you received; imagine how difficult it would be if you hadn't received any gifts. Hopefully that will inspire a more thankful heart!
