6 to 24 months ahead:

Determine your budget and the kind of wedding (informal, formal, etc.); decide on the wedding location.

Decide who will be performing the marriage ceremony. If planning to marry in an LDS temple, call now and make reservations.

Consider hiring a wedding consultant.

Plan a reception. Look at the Wedding Consultant for great reception ideas.

Select a photographer/videographer, a florist, & musicians.

Choose your attendants.

Select your dress, veil, accessories, and bridesmaids' dresses.

Enroll with the bridal gift registry of your favorite department or specialty stores. (It is a good idea to register with more than one store!)

Consult a men's formalwear specialist.

4 to 6 months ahead:

Draw up your invitation list; have your fiancé draw up his.

Order your invitations, personal stationary, and notepaper.

Plan accommodations for your out-of-town guests.

If you are planning to have a rehearsal dinner, you may want to make arrangements with caterers & restaurants.

Plan your honeymoon.

If you plan to have a trousseau, begin purchasing trousseau items. You can purchase these items at a department store.

Have mothers choose their dresses. You may want them in formal wear, or something a bit more conservative (found at a department store). Or they may want to purchase their own fabric and make their dresses.

Visit your doctor for a complete physical examination, set a date for blood tests. (Valid time periods vary from state to state.)

Address wedding invitations.

Select your wedding reception music.

Choose gifts for your attendants.

Buy wedding rings and order engravings.

Make a date with your fiancé to get the marriage license. (Check your state's law to see how many days a license is valid.)

1 to 2 months ahead:

Buy a wedding gift for your groom at your nearest department store.

Make an appointment with a hairstylist.

Consider hiring a professional makeup artist for your wedding day.

Have final dress fittings with your chosen bridal wear store.

Plan how to handle traffic and parking.

Mail your invitations.

Have a formal wedding portrait taken.

Attend parties in your honor.

Plan bridesmaids' party. You may want to use a party planning service.

Record each gift as received and write a thank-you note promptly.

Make a checklist of home furnishings that are still needed.

Pick up wedding rings.

2 weeks ahead

Send your wedding announcements to the newspaper.

Draw up a seating plan for reception; make cards for the bride's table.

Go over your personal trousseau and take care of any last-minute items by making a last-minute run to a department store.

If you plan to change your name or social security number, driver's license, credit cards, or bank accounts, contact the necessary offices to obtain the required forms.

Arrange to move your belongings to your new home.

Be sure thank you notes are written.

Select photos and order album.

Contact Motor Vehicle Administration, Social Security, credit cards, etc. regarding name change, if applicable.

Find and select a professional gown preservation specialist for your gown.
